@chazzyMooMoo While I do think everyone in hard labor jobs should be paid more, you must consider that the costs of health care are incredibly high as is. Positions in CNA are sometimes fueled by people who want to get experience in the field before going into nursing, physician assistant, or even medical school. It also gives a good entry opportunity to recent immigrants. I don’t have an extensive background working with CNA’s but my understanding is that rarely it is a long-term career.

@jaysmic24 I’m thinking about being a CNA and I work very hard at working no matter what the job. My mother is a CNA, but she gets paid a lot ( almost 15 an hour ). She works hard too.

a good nurse’s aid is like a rare precious jewel. as a inpatient RN, getting a CNA to help u with basic patient needs (bathing/toileting)are like pulling teeth w/o an anesthetic. they just dont want to do what they r hired to do. in the end i end up doing TOTAL care of the pt. my first job as an RN was 15$/hr! in some crappy border town in TX. people today feel entitled and refuse to do the “dirty work” for 15$/hr.

@zomven1 CNAs may only make round $10 an hour, but you gotta remember they get a shit load of overtime, shift differentials, and pick up bonus. I’m a CNA and last year I made close to $22,000. Nursing assistants take care of peoples lives, I’d choose this over fast food any day.

Its just human nature for some people to hate i guess lol. Speaking of that it also happens on the job too. Dont give anyone at work anything to fight you with. We all need our jobs in this economy so if you get hired as a CNA, during the first 90 days do everything you can to not be late and not call in. Reliability is more than half of the job depending on where you work. Take a 3×5 card and write reminders for yourself on it if you are prone to forgetting things to avoid patient complaints.

Are you a nursing assistant looking to become a nurse? My organization provides a $5000 scholarship to the Nursing Assistant of the Year. Search YouTube for “nursing assistant scholarship” for more information.

Also for those reading this who are going to be working as a CNA or PCT, taking care of yourself is even more important. Make sure to drink plenty of water while at work to not get dehydrated since the job is pretty physical. Take a good multivitamin everyday and eat a good breakfast. Wash your hands a LOT. Personal problems such as a divorce or breakup, etc should be handled away from work. Take time off for any emotional problems like that because you wont be able to concentrate at work.

You also have to be a person that is not emotionally sensitive if a patient calls you out of your name or if a nurse or co-worker talks to you in a tone that you perceive as being mean. You’ll be working with people from different ethnic backgrounds and cultures and their way of talking or doing things may be different from yours and you cant be too sensitive. Also try not to get angry if on some days you are not able to take your lunch break because the needs of the patients are so complex.

I don’t know about some people but this is the field you go in to because you just love to help people. I finished my CNA l class at the beginning of this year and right now I’m in CNA ll class. After that I’ll probably go for my RN:)

See, I should have done what you did. I worked at Wal-Mart for 3 1/2 years during college before I got accepted to the nursing program at my school. I went from $8.15 – $9.95 during that time. That’s absolutely NOTHING. You’re off to a great start! =)

Meant to say that I enjoy being at the bedside and have no desire to go on to get my NP degree. Sorry about that, lol. =) My comments are directed to theloyalone100; I posted reply to their comment, but it doesn’t look like it’s falling under their comment. Just for clarification. =)
